Most Influential Bloggers in Malaysia

The focus of this article is to look at popular Malaysian Bloggers who either make a significant income from blogging and/or have a famous online presence whilst giving reasons why they are so popular.

Criteria and Why Influential?

The selection process was based on “online criteria” such as Google/Yahoo/MSN backlinks, Alexa ranking and being referred to in other Blogger’s posts. I was also looking for people who blog full time and make a high income from their sites.

Previous popular blog lists have been based around technorati etc.,. Since Technorati is blocked in countries like China, it can’t give a fair result as to where visits are coming from. The best way of comparing would be to look at each site’s Google Analytic stats, but I seriously doubt bloggers would give me that information!

About the Judge

My name is Giles Dawe and my background is that I’ve been running “Best Blogs Asia“, the biggest directory of Asian Blog links since 2003 where users vote for their favourite blogs. I’m also a blogger living in Asia and web producer, so I know the reasons how and why a site is popular.

Malaysian Blog List

Whenever I’ve made searches in the past for “Best Malaysian Blogs” I’ve always come across Political blogs, Food blogs, technology or Celebrity sites. I’m looking for bloggers who have something to say, preferably about life in Malaysia and about themselves.

Kenny Sia

Kenny Sia

Kenny Sia is a funny guy.

He blogs about himself and his travels, making each post interesting and most have photos. Each entry gets at least 50+ comments so means he’s established himself with repeat visitors and has a huge amount traffic driven to his site.

Why is he influential?

He’s been on tv, blogs about everyday life, makes substantial amounts of money from his blog whilst not pushing for the hard sell.

Liew CF

Liew CF

Liew CF is a techy blogger who promotes all things techy and internet related.

Why is he influential?

Whilst there may be other Malaysian bloggers who can earn more than Liew CF by discussing tech/make money online, from reading his blog it doesn’t feel like he’s trying to make you click on any affiliate links or anything else which can make him richer.

He just gives useful advice and has got very rich from his trusted readership.

Hot Screensaver

Hot Screensaver

Hot Screensaver is a blogger who talks about food, fashion and everyday life in Malaysia.

Why is he influential?

He has large numbers of visitors to his site, perhaps monetising on visitors who search the site looking for “hot chicks” or latest fashion tips.

The location and colouring of his Adsense adverts must bring him substantial amounts of income, whilst the different types of postings in different niches must bring different types of visitors to his site.

5xmom

5xmom

5xmom is run by Lilian Chan, a full time blogger who also looks after her family.

Her posts attract a lot of debates on a wide range of subjects.

Why is she influential?

If there was an award for hardest working blogger, than 5xmom would probably win it.

She blogs on multiple sites with different niches, consistently and makes a steady stream of revenue.

Sabahan

Sabahan

Sabahan is a Borneo based blogger, who blogs and sells his own affiliate products online.

Why is he influential?

He discloses how much income he makes, which programs he uses and whether they were effective or not.

This form of honesty is reflected by his users interest, whilst their comments on posts are always replied to by Sabahan.

Malaysian Blogger Chart

Malaysian Chart

Notable Mentions

It’s always nice to see the top bloggers, then people always link to them and they get more popular. But what about other popular bloggers?

Other Malaysian Bloggers are at in the Directory.

How do they all make money?

This is the million dollar question, but it’s a combination of having the right amount of visitors (Malaysia, Singapore and US mostly) who are targeted at the products they are selling:

Other ways to make Money

Conclusion

There are always new bloggers coming about on the scene and the list would be ever changing. This isn’t a definitive guide, but should be used as indication of who is out there in this particular country. If there is someone who is missing from this list, let me know!

How Malaysian Bloggers Make Money

Hai,i read this artikel from The Star Online

The Star Online has published an interesting article about blogging and how Malaysian bloggers are making money from it via online advertising.

The story starts with some discussion about two local blog advertising companies Nuffnang.com.my and Advertlets.com.

These companies seem to be gaining ground among the local bloggers and are worth checking out if you are trying to monetize your blog and don’t mind placing permanent image ads in there.

Several well-known bloggers are also featured in the article. This includes Gareth Davies, who blogs at ShaolinTiger.com, Lillian Chan who owns 5xmom.com and JeffOoi.com.

The article gives a general overview on how Malaysian bloggers are using online advertising to generate income from their blogs.

We still have a long way to go before we could narrow the gap between our country and the developed nations such as the UK and US as far as online advertising is concern. But we are heading in the right direction.

If you are wondering how much you could make from blogging in Malaysia, the article should give you some hints on what’s possible.

How to Select Suitable Products to Sell On Your Blog

Choosing the right products to sell is one of the most challenging steps you’ll take when you want make money from affiliate programs. You can select products from the best and biggest merchants such as Amazon, but that doesn’t mean you’ll make money if the product itself has a poor conversion rates.

Some people get lucky and hit the jackpot after only a few tries. For the rest, due diligence may help you filter out products with poor conversion rates. Once you’ve gathered enough experience you’ll be able to better decide which products to promote.

I guess the question you should ask is that, is selling products from your blog is for you? If you are already doing sponsored review, why not try selling products to further diversify your blog’s revenue stream?

Before you decide on which products to sell, there are several factors that you need to consider to ensure that you don’t waste time trying to sell something that nobody wants to buy.

  1. Consider Your Blog’s Niche The best products to sell are those related to your niche. It’s easier to get started by promoting things you have an interest in. In contrast, it’s harder to keep yourself motivated when you are trying to promote products that you don’t have a genuine interest in.Your readers will also pay more attention to your promotion if it relates to their interests.
  2. Consider the Competition Having a good product to promote is not enough. You’ll also need to consider the competition. If everyone is promoting the same product, you’ll lose the unique edge that could help you sell it. The chance for a customer to buy from you is lower when they can find similar products promoted by hundreds of other bloggers. Then again, it all depends on your Unique Selling Preposition or USP. USP is the benefits that you can deliver to users that’s not offered by any competitor. It’s important because it makes you stand out from the crowd.
  3. Measure the Demand While it’s great if the product has a wide appeal, ideally niche products would do better when it comes to selling from your blog. Again consider you blog readers when deciding which products to sell.If you are trying to get visitors from the search engine, the product should at least have a wide geographical target market. You can determine the demand for a product by doing some keyword research using the Google Keywords Tool.
  4. The Product’s Commission Rates It’s easier to make money form your blog if you already have tons of existing loyal readers. However, if getting visitors to your blog involves spending money on pay per click search engines such as AdWords, you need to pay close attention to the product’s commission rates as you will be competing for even-thinner margins.Selling $10 book from Amazon that offers 3% commission won’t get you far. Ideally, you should select products that offer high commission rates such as ebook or software. In addition look for merchants that offer increased commissions when you sell more.
  5. Is the Product Easy to Use? Ideally you should select products that’s the users can use immediately. The more user-friendly the product, the lower the conversion barrier. A product that available directly via the Internet is even better.
  6. Recurring Commission Recurring or repeat commission is when a merchants offers commission for any number of sales from the same customer within a certain time frame. If the product has to potential to develop repeat business, you’ll only have to sell it once but get paid each time a new sale is made. Some of the products that offer recurring commission are web hosting, software upgrades, consumables such as inkjets, membership sites, and online service subscriptions (dating sites).
  7. Payment consideration Another thing to consider is how much you get paid and when you get paid. A merchant usually set a certain threshold before payment is sent. Higher threshold means it may take longer for you see the first pay check if you only sell one or two products once in a blue moon.If your merchants run their affiliate programs through affiliate network like Commission Junction (CJ.com), your payments would include all the commissions from all the vendors that you’ve promoted in the network.Additionally, consider how you get paid. Do you prefer payment via PayPal, a check or direct deposit?

  8. Product Availability Certain products are only available in certain countries. So when you select a product to promote, make sure it’s also available to the geographic location you are targeting.

Getting your feet wet with affiliate programs is the best way to start selling products from your blog. You don’t have to own the product and customer support issues are handled by the merchants. There’s no upfront cost to get up and running, except your time and ideas.

10 Blog Traffic Tips

In every bloggers life comes a special day – the day they first launch a new blog. Now unless you went out and purchased someone else’’s blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader – you. Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that’’s about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.

Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called “traction”, which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.

Top 10 Tips

10. Write at least five major “pillar” articles. A pillar article is a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good “how-to” lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn’t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.

9. Write one new blog post per day minimum. Not every post has to be a pillar, but you should work on getting those five pillars done at the same time as you keep your blog fresh with a daily news or short article style post. The important thing here is to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time so they feel that if they come back tomorrow they will likely find something new. This causes them to bookmark your site or subscribe to your blog feed.

You don”t have to produce one post per day all the time but it is important you do when your blog is brand new. Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down to a few per week instead. The first few months are critical so the more content you can produce at this time the better.

8. Use a proper domain name. If you are serious about blogging be serious about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need a easily rememberable domain name. People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that’’s the offline world, you remember that place right?) so you need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL. Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you’ve done a good job!).

7. Start commenting on other blogs. Once you have your pillar articles and your daily fresh smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people’s blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.

Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commentor and always have something valuable to say then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.

6. Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts. A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger’’s article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry – it’’s sort of like your blog telling someone else’s blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.

This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important – it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will likely come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.

5. Encourage comments on your own blog. One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.

4. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival. A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival often enjoy a spike in new readers.

To find the right blog carnival for your blog, do a search at blogcarnival.com.

3. Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com. To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it’’s so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it’’s worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!

2. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. This is another tip that doesn’t bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it’’s worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have – your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.

How you benefit is through what is called your “Resource Box”. You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.

1. Write more pillar articles. Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I’ve listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won’t stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.

I hope you enjoyed my list of traffic tips. Everything listed above are techniques I’ve put into place myself for my blogs and have worked for me, however it’’s certainly not a comprehensive list. There are many more things you can do. Finding readers is all about testing to see what works best for you and your audience and I have no doubt if you put your mind to it you will find a balance that works for you.

10 Don’ts to Help You Avoid Having Your AdSense Account Banned

AdSense account banning could happen to anyone regardless of how big or small they are as a publisher.

This was what had happened to Henry and Wilson, a twin from Baltimore who was pulling $200,000 monthly from AdSense. Then it all came down crashing last month when they were banned by Google for invalid clicks barely a few days before the next payment was supposed to arrive.

If you think this will never happen to you, think again. Here are the 10 things you should do to prevent AdSense banning.

1. Familiarise Yourself with AdSense Program Policies

Unlike other program policies, this one is actually readable without all the technical mumbo jumbo that make your head spin.

2.Don’t Click On Your Own Ads

This is obvious but many people still do it thinking they won’t get caught.

On the other hand, you don’t have to lose sleep over accidental clicks generated and there’s no need to inform them if it happens.

If you are interested with an ad, just type the URL manually into your browser’s address bar, or use the AdSense preview tool.

3.Don’t Ask Others to Click on Your Ads
Some even go one step further asking their friends from different locations to click on their ads. If you are tempted to do this, don’t. Google click fraud system is smart enough to identify such clicks as fraudulent ones.
Don’t ask or beg your visitors to click on your ads. Don’t exchange clicks with other publishers like holding a “I’ll click yours if you click mine” agreement.
All this leads to inflated advertiser costs. If your account isn’t yet disabled, advertisers would probably stop advertising on your blog.
4.Don’t Put Images Next to Your AdSense Ads
Some publishers discovered that they could improve their CTR when images are placed next to the AdSense ads. This setup tricks the visitors into thinking that the images are somehow related to the ads.
This practice is prohibited by Google. If your site contains elements that increase CTR without increasing conversion rates for advertisers, your clicks may be considered invalid.

5.Don’t Use Pop-up or Automatic Software Installations
Avoid using pop-up (or pop-under) at your blog where AdSense is displayed. If you are purchasing traffic from other sites, make sure that they do not display your site in pop-ups.
In addition, make user your site do no prompt users to install software on their machines.
6.Don’t Alter Your AdSense Code
You are not allowed to change your AdSense code for any reason unless specifically authorized to do so by Google. If you need to change the ad unit layout, colour or format, generate new code from your account.

7.Don’t Reveal Your Click Through Rates (CTR)
While you can tell people how much you make in a month from AdSense, you are not allowed to reveal how much you earn per click.

8.Don’t Integrate AdSense code into a Software Application
This is mainly for software developer who’s thinking they could make money by integrating their AdSense code into a software application.

9.Don’t Not Display Google AdSense on Sites Primarily in an Unsupported Language or With Unsuitable Content
If your site is written in a language other than English, make sure it’s primarily written in one of the supported languages.
So if you have a blog written primarily in Malay for instance, you are not allowed to place AdSense because it’s not one of the supported languages.
In addition, Google don’t accept AdSense on pages that promote or sell:
Violent content, racial intolerance, pornography, adult, or mature content, hacking/cracking content, iIllicit drugs and drug paraphernalia, excessive profanity, gambling or casino-related content

10.Don’t Display Competitive Ads and Services
This doesn’t mean that you are not allowed to use other ad programs, contextually or otherwise on your site. You may display other advertising programs on the same page as AdSense as long as they don’t resemble the look and feel of AdSense ads.
In addition, even though the competing ad units share the same size and styling, you won’t be breaking AdSense policy as long as other elements such as the colour schemes differentiate the look and feel of each ad unit.
Therefore, ads like YPN, Chitika, Kontera, and AdBrite are allowed provided that they don’t mimic AdSense. However, you have to make sure the competing ad policy allows AdSense on the same page.

There are other don’ts that you need to observer; again the AdSense Program Policies is a good place to start to learn whether your are in full compliance with their policies. Finally, if you are unsure whether you are entering into the “grey area”, just shot an email to Google and ask them about your ad placement.

What to Do If Your Are Banned from AdSense

To set the record straight, I think publishers who are violating AdSense term and policies on purpose deserve to be banned. As an AdWords advertiser myself, I don’t appreciate paying someone who has no intention of offering me a good return on my investment.

AdSense publishers only make money when the AdWords publishers make money. As long as the supply and demand is kept in balance, everyone will be a happy camper.

AdWords has added a new feature recently which allow advertisers see the domains where their ads are being served within Google’s content network i.e. AdSense publishers’ sites. So it’s more important than ever for publishers to create good quality sites where AdSense ads are shown.

On the other hand, I am curious to know whether there are innocent publishers who are banned from AdSense for violating the program term and policies because of others wrong-doing but they were unable to prove so.

Are You Really Innocent?

If your account is being suspended, you need to ask yourself if you are really innocent. There’s no point lying to them if you’ve been ‘secretly’ clicking your ads now and then and you get caught for doing it.

In such case, the best thing to do is to admit your mistake and promise them to not do it again. If it’s accidental clicks, tell them about it but it’ll only get you so far. You need to back your claim with any raw logs to aid their investigation.

An unhappy user launching a click attack on your website could get you in trouble. However, their system is getting smarter and will be able to determine whether the click activity fit a pattern that may artificially drive up your earnings intentionally.

If you noticed strange pattern in your account, tell them about.

What to Do When Your Account Is Being Suspended?

There are a couple of things you can do when you are banned from AdSense.

Write to Them and Appeal For Reinstatement

This isn’t as easy as it sounds but it’s not impossible to do. If you can maintain in good faith that the invalid activity was not due to the actions or negligence of you or those for whom you are responsible, you can appeal for reinstatement.

You need to support your claims with any raw logs to assist them in their investigation. Explain the steps you have taken to ensure the problem doesn’t recur in the future. Remember you are allowed for one appeal only, so make full use of the opportunity to present your case properly. You may contact them through their online form.

It’s very important to be calm and polite when contacting them. Remember, you are not in a position to demand anything but some consideration since in Google eyes, or rather their anti-fraud algorithm has proven you guilty.

Open a New Account

If your appeal was denied for invalid click activity, you are no longer allowed to register a new account with them. To get around this, you can ask someone related to you to register a new account and use his/her account to place ads on your site provided that your site is in compliance with AdSense policies.

However, if they determine that the other publisher’s account pose a risk to their AdWords advertisers, they may disable it too.

Use Other Publisher’s Account

You can let other AdSense publisher place their ads on your site. It’s up to you and the publisher on how you want to divide the earnings generated from the arrangement.

Use Other Advertising Programs

If everything fails, you may have to say good bye to Google AdSense. Try other advertising programs to monetize your site. Here are some alternatives you can try:
